Pros The ALPS Mountaineering Meramac 2 Person Tent is a tent with plenty of positives. First of all, it has two doors. If you have read a few tent reviews of mine, you know that I love tents that have multiple doors. The rainfly covers the whole tent. The material of the inner wall is not coated, so that the air can ventilate easily through the wall. There is one window on each door of the tent, which can be covered up with a zipper.

Cons Unfortunately as with all tents that have multiple doors, this one is a bit on the heavy side as well. The tent has no vestibule, which means that you might bring dirt or water into the tent with your clothes.

The tent has a free-standing design. This means that you can set it up and use it without securing it with stakes. The tent weights 7 lbs, which means that it is considerably heavier than other backpacking tents on the market. This is largely down to the weight the two doors and the extra large zippers add to the tent.

The tent has shock-corded fiberglass poles. The joints of the poles are made of aluminum, so that they don’t rust like iron joints would. The poles can be attached to the inner wall of the tent with clips. This way you can avoid inserting the poles into the fabric of the tent, potentially tearing it up in the process.

The excellent waterproofing system of the tent consists of the factory-coated waterproof fly, and the factory seamed floor. Unfortunately the fabric of the floor seems a bit thin, there is a chance that it will tear up through extended use. I advise you to put down a ground tarp under the tent before you set it up to protect it from rocks and debris.

My major issue with the design of the ALPS Mountaineering Meramac 2 Person Tent is the lack of a vestibule. I think a vestibule is a vital part of a good waterproof tent. It serves as a doorway between the outside world and the inside of your tent. You can take off your dirty gear and store it inside the vestibule.

Conclusion

The ALPS Mountaineering Meramac 2 Person Tent is a well-designed tent that meets many of my requirements of a great waterproof tent. It has a great waterproofing system, it is big enough for two people, it has two doors, and it is very quick and easy to set up. The lack of vestibule is a shame, but nothing can be perfect I guess, not even the ALPS Mountaineering Meramac 2 Person Tent.
